How much do you really know about your golf clubs? Did you know that * The lower the loft on your driver, the farther you'll hit it? * Your new driver has a larger "sweetspot?" * You are playing a stiff shaft, because it says so on it. * Women's clubs are designed for women? Fine, but the problem is... NONE OF THOSE THINGS ARE TRUE Tom Wishon, one of the world's leading club designers, takes you on a guided tour of the golf club, explaining in lay language how and why golf clubs work the way they do. Perhaps of even greater importance, he explains what to look for-and what to look out for-when you buy your next club. "...the average golfer knows little more about golf clubs than what he or she reads in advertising or sees in Golf Channel infomercials. This lack of golf equipment knowledge results in millions of golfers attempting to play an already difficult game with equipment that not only won't, but CAN'T POSSIBLY allow them to play to the best of their ability." It turns out the latest cutting-edge frontier in golf... is plain old-fashioned custom club fitting. Do you think * That clubheads made from harder metal will hit the ball farther? * The faster you swing, the stiffer your shaft should be? * That your clubs are "just like the ones the pros use?" Find out WHY those things are not true and learn the things they do NOT tell you in the golf club ads!

The New Search for the Perfect Golf Club Tom Wishon 9781611791587 Books

I had happened on his articles online while researching golf clubs and trying to improve my game. He's got decades of clubfitting and design experience. His matter of fact history of the " one size fits all" mentality of the major manufacturers rings true. I found his book and read it recently. Made all the sense in the world. I wasn't ready to get fitted quite yet. Having a used set of clubs, I decided to take matters into my own hands and shorten my clubs to the recommended length based on key physical measurements. I haven't played a round yet with them but at the range accuracy has improved significantly, thank you, Mr. Wishon. This book has all the information you need to either do it yourself or gives you the reinforcement to get custom fitted, something I am seriously considering. I highly recommend this book.

The New Search for the Perfect Golf Club Tom Wishon 9781611791587 Books Reviews

This book as given me a much better understanding of how a club is supposed to work. While I'm willing to pay for quality this book shows how it's determined. I'd encourage all golfers to read this book if you're serious about your game and equipment.
This is probably the single most valuable book you could read prior to purchasing any golf clubs. It is clearly written and contains an absolute wealth of knowledge. If you're buying a dryer, I recommend his search for the perfect driver as well.
After I read two thirds of this book, I went for a golf fitting. While it is early, I have a better idea of how properly fitted equipment will help me improve my game. After getting a test club driver I have already hit it farther than I have ever hit with my name brand driver. Looking forward to continuing my work with the Clubfitter and enjoying golf more.
Excellent book! Chock full of practical information that you can use right away. Some information about how the big OEMs equipment manufactures conduct business is truly shocking. Learning how a variety of equipment choices effects your game gives you the golfer the opportunity to optimize your scoring. A must read for the serious golfer! Tom Wishon is honest and technically qualified - a man who tells it straight.
After reading Wishon's book, I wish I didn't walk into the big box golf stores and buy clubs right off the rack. I used there "simulator" to hit irons, and was astonished I was hitting them so far. No kidding, the launch monitor at the big box golf store is dialed in for distance. We all want distance, so seeing that...I bought clubs right off the rack. They turned out to be completely wrong for my game.

Wishon describes the science in club making and the reasons to have them professionally fitted. He's right. I now have a custom set of irons that are set to my strength, swing style and speed. I went from a 22-handicap to a 12-handicap.

If you want to improve your game and shot making consistency because of the clubs that your using - read this book. It's not a book that teaches you lessons on how to swing, that's up to you, but it's made for those that want to understand how a golf club works.
What really got to me is how Wishon shows that the hardware suppliers have gradually strengthened the lofts of golf clubs and the lengths of the shafts to the point where the average or below average golf hacker will find it more difficult to improve his game. Wishon shows how to take charge of your game. He points out simple things that you can do to improve your golf equipment as well as advising you to get to the nearest clubmaking professional who will measure you for a set of clubs that will help you to improve your game. Wishon feels that it is the average golfer who can benefit for custom clubs built to the individual measurements made by a clubmaking professional.
Tom Wishon goes into a ton of details about your golf clubs and how it impacts your results. At times, the detail might be eye glazing for some readers, but if so, just pick up the key concepts and move along. He really gives an excellent overview of all the items that impact the results of your golf shot from the way your clubs are designed. A few of the items are starting to get a little dated, i.e. he spends a lot of time talking about the fact that most golfers should carry hybrids instead of long irons- I think most golfers have started to carry hybrids instead of a 2-3-4 iron so that's not as applicable as it was at one point. But that does not take away from the value of this book. It gives you a great education. Warning, it will make you want to rush right out to get fitted at a custom club maker, so you do risk upsetting your spouse with that potentially unseen expense. I still haven't made that sale, but I fully intend to!
